Tim Burton
Biographical Information
Name: Timothy Walter Burton (Tim Burton)
Age: 54
Date Of Birth: August 25, 1958
Country Of Origin: Burbank, California, USA
Career Status: Director, Artist, Animator, Producer and Writer
While growing up in Burbank California Burton felt quite alienated (an outsider), lonely and rejected, “I always felt like Frankenstein and my neighbours were all the angry villagers.” Burton consoled himself with drawing and an interest in visual media that he indulged through colourful forms of popular entertainment such as: newspaper comics, advertising, greeting cards, children’s literature, toys, animated cartoons, monster movies, comedy, science fiction films, carnival sideshows, performance art, and holiday rituals, including the art of the Mexican Day of the Dead. Burton was lucky enough to have an art teacher that encouraged students to explore their own individual artistic styles. Feelings such as isolation and being the outsider had a significant impact on Burton's future artworks, with the main protagonists of his films/sketches harbouring the same character traits he felt as a child.
Burton's works evolved during two years of study at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and four years working as an animator at the Walt Disney Company where he discovered that "when he wore striped socks he felt more grounded", which influenced his ideas, toning them down, making them more acceptable to the Disney audience. During this period a number of his signature motifs such as his creature-based characters; his obsession with alienated characters which are evident in his works for example, The Penguin in Batman Returns (Burton focused on the villains/the outsiders in this film and created a far darker atmosphere compared to its predecessor); unique combinations of horror and humour; stylistic traits; and his use of masks and body modification (elongated skinny bodies used to create the characters in Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas) emerged which later reoccurred in many of his successful films.
